What to do with a new gi

A new Judo or jiu jitsu gi made from 100% cotton will shrink when it gets wet. Judo and Jiu JItsu gis that are not prewashed or preshrunked can shrink approximately 1 full size before stopping.  Because of the dying process colored gis tend to shrink less then white gis. It can take  2 hot water washes and dryer sessions to stabilize the shrinkage or up to 6-8 cold water wash and hang dry cycles to get the similar results.

On no Preshrunk gis you can expect anywhere from  10 – 20% srinkage along the sleeve length and pant lenght.  The degree of shrinkage varies by weave, cotton density,  and gi design.

SHRINK TO FIT GI PROCEDURE

We have come up with a procedure that will quickly reduce your new gis size to its natural state. Maximum shrinkage will occur if you use a dryer. Usually you must shrink the gi at least twice before it reaches its final size.

Once the gi has been shrunk you may hem the pants and/or sleeves and sew on any patches.

  1. Soak in cold water for 2 hours
  2. Wash hot, lots of soap, ¼ cup of white vinegar
  3. Dry gi in dryer until the lapel at the thickest part is hot
  4. Wash in Cold Water
  5. Dry the gi a second time in the dryer until the lapel at the thickest part is hot

This should shrink the gi to roughly wherever it’s going to get to.

How to take care of your Gi

Keep your Judo or BJJ Gi in tip top shape

We all know a  judo or BJJ gi will last a few years when treated with care and respect. Our manufacture’s gi washing recommendations is to always wash your uniform in cold water and hang dry. Plus never use bleach to clean your uniform. Staying true to this method will I’m sure provide you with the longest possible lifespan of your gi but it’s really almost unrealistic to preform. So instead of leaving you our loyal customer in the dark to search google to find what is the best way to take care of your judo or bjj gi. We will provide you with a some suggestions and if you follow our suggestions it will help you maintain your Gi in tip top shape.

  • Hang dry your gi after every use. (80% of the people out there only have one gi and washing it between every training session is unrealistic)
  • DO NOT leave a wet/sweaty gi balled up in your Gym bag. ( Funky bateria will start to grow and the fabric will began to laterally rot)
  • Turn the gi inside out during wash.
  • Wash one heavyweight gi or maybe two lightweight gis at a time (heavy weight gis can be hard on your washing machine, plus cramming you washer won’t get your gis cleaner as their may not be leaving enough room for the gis to get shaken and stirred )
  • Wash your gi in warm water. (if your gi isn’t preshrunk to the max it will anyways regardless if you only wash it in cold water it just takes longer)
  • Do not mix your gi with other colors (unless you enjoy the anticipation of waiting to see what color your white gi may be this week)
  • DO NOT use bleach or detergent with bleach. (bleach will weaken the cotton fibers of your gi and shorten it’s life span)
  • Wash gi BEFORE it starts to smell. (do everyone a favor and wash your gi before the funky ass bacteria has already called your gi home)
  • The use of a dryer is also not recommended, but in reality it’s not that bad and you don’t want to train in a wet gi as it will just be a petri dish for funky bacteria. Plus heat kills bacteria and it’s not like you gi will shrink forever if you force the shrinkage it will take 2 washed in hot water and dry it in the dryer to get 98% of the shrinkage out of the way, if you only cold wash and hang dry it may take 6-8 washes to get to the same level of shrinkage out of your gi. with preshrunk gi may have been washed once the you will still see some shrinkage in your first wash just not as much.

We will be adding more info on various products and how to deal with certain stains shortly
